Water safety around the home

New Zealand Child Safety Foundation

Of those children aged less than five years that drown, most drown in the home environment (59%) - in home pools and spas (40%), the bath (12%) and other sites around the home (7%).

  • Always supervise your child around water
  • Make sure your hot water Is no more than 50° C
  • Put cold water in the bath first
  • Keep bathroom and toilet doors closed
  • Keep lids on buckets and keep buckets out of reach
  • Take the phone of the hook at bath times
  • Empty bath straight away
  • Don’t rely on support rings to keep the baby upright in water
  • Don’t rely on an older child to supervise

This checklist has been kindly provided by the New Zealand Child Safety Foundation , one of New Zealand’s least known but most valuable charitable foundations. Established in 1985 as the New Zealand Safe Playing Trust to teach safety to pre-school and early primary school pupils, the Child Safety Foundation NZ was renamed in 1993. The Foundation is not funded by the Government and derives it’s funding from donations and fundraising. The foundation, through the generosity of its sponsors and other limited funding does manage to provide worthwhile services to support young families.
